Poland's National Public Prosecutor's Office asked for Gawłowski, secretary general of the Civic Platform party, to be placed on remand because of "a real worry about perverting the course of justice".

The prosecution service said Gawłowski could try to tamper with witnesses.

Gawłowski faces three corruption charges. He has been accused of taking a cash bribe of at least PLN 175,000 (EUR 42,000) and two watches valued up to PLN 25,000 during the time he served as deputy environment minister under Poland's previous Civic Platform-led government. (vb/pk)
