Polish police on Monday said that the truck's Serbian driver heard voices coming from his semi-trailer after he stopped at a petrol station in Jaworzno, southern Poland.

The driver called the police, who found three men inside, none of whom was carrying identity documents.

The men were given basic medical attention as well as food and drink before they were handed over to the Polish Border Guard.

Border Guard officers, with the help of a translator, confirmed that the men were aged 17, 18 and 19 and were all from Afghanistan.

The 17-year-old is to be returned to the country where he first applied for asylum while the other men have been charged with illegally crossing a border.

Until their cases are finalised, the minor has been placed in a care facility and the two adult men will be held at a guarded centre for foreigners. (vb/pk)
