With May 1 (Labour Day) and May 3 (Constitution Day) public holidays, many Polish families have decided to take the entire week off, encouraged by forecasts of summer weather.

Police appealed to drivers to keep their speed down.

Radosław Kobryś, from the traffic department of Polish police headquarters, said: “If someone wants to break traffic laws in a drastic way, he should not expect leniency. In addition to a fine, he may have his driving licence taken away.”

Police said that 54 people died on Polish roads during the same period last year.
