Poland recovered its sovereignty on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of foreign rule.

Deputy Culture Minister Jarosław Sellin told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Wednesday that festivities would include exhibitions, concerts, historical reenactments, lectures and special history classes at schools.

The culture ministry will help finance almost 220 such initiatives, Sellin said.

He added that the ministry selected these from a total of 2,500 projects that were submitted for co-financing as part of the government’s Niepodległa (Independent) programme.

The Niepodległa programme will run until 2021, "and perhaps even 2022," Sellin said.

“We want the programme to encompass not only events marking the regaining of independence" in 1918, but also showing how it was consolidated in the years that followed, Sellin said.

The programme features several hundred events abroad in an effort to promote Polish history and culture worldwide, Sellin told Polish Radio.
