Poland aims to be a “keystone” between Europe and America amid a growing trans-Atlantic divide, the Polish prime minister has said.

Mateusz Morawiecki said in a media interview that the paths of the European Union and the United States “have started to diverge quite a bit” and that Poland wanted to help bridge the gap.

“Now it depends on us whether we build for ourselves a position as a keystone, an integrator, between these two entities, or whether we will be in the uncomfortable situation of constant manoeuvring between them,” Morawiecki told conservative weekly Gazeta Polska in an interview.

He declared that his “government’s goal is absolutely the first of these options.”

Positioning Poland as a link uniting Europe and America “presents a big opportunity for our country,” Morawiecki said.

“This is the scenario we are working on,” he added.

Poland's Rzeczpospolita newspaper reported this week that Poland is in a tight spot between Washington and Brussels over policy on Iran.

Meanwhile, Poland's minister for enterprise and technology was quoted as saying early this month that Poland supported the European Union’s executive arm in its opposition to new US tariffs on steel and aluminium.
