The tunnel under the Świna River is scheduled to be built over the next four years to connect two key parts of the city on two separate islands.

Residents currently have to use ferries, which do not have sufficient capacity, leading to long waits, Poland's PAP news agency has reported.

“We will be watching every day so that the tunnel opens in four years,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said during the signing ceremony on Monday.

The project is expected to cost PLN 913 million (EUR 212 million, USD 248 million), including PLN 776 million in European Union funds, officials said.

Poland’s prime minister last month reaffirmed his government’s plan to build a strategic canal in the north of the country between the Vistula Lagoon and Gdańsk Bay in the Baltic Sea.
