PM praises Poland’s Territorial Army

Strong armed forces guarantee Poland's security, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday at ceremonies marking the country’s first Territorial Army Day.

“The territorials—as you refer to yourselves—are the pride of the Polish army," Morawiecki said at the ceremonies in central Warsaw.

Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said that 14 Territorial Army brigades were being set up in Poland, with another four planned.

In 2016, Poland’s then-Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz paved the way to the creation of new territorial defence forces.

Macierewicz said at the time that new territorial units were needed because Poland “is threatened by the actions of our north-eastern neighbour Russia, which makes no secret of its aggressive intentions and which systematically, at least since 2008, has been undertaking action aiming to destabilize the peaceful order in Europe… directly endangering Poland and our immediate neighbours."
