Poles will on Sunday head to the ballot box in local elections around the country.

Voters will elect nearly 47,000 aldermen and 2,500 mayors and other local government officials nationwide.

A second round of voting, if needed, will be held on November 4.

Run-offs between the two most popular mayoral contenders will take place where the winning candidate fails to garner more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

Around 30 million Poles are entitled to cast their ballot in the local government elections, state news agency PAP reported.

Polling stations were to open at 7am on Sunday and were due to close at 9pm.

A media blackout came into force on Friday at midnight under which domestic news providers are forbidden by law from publishing opinion polls showing the level of support for candidates in the elections.

The ban lasts until polling stations close. Political campaigning is also forbidden during this period.
