The campaign will continue until Sunday with 6,000 officers looking to ensure road safety on some of the heaviest traffic days of the year.

Police will especially patrol roads into towns and around cemeteries.

Police also warn that the All Saints' Day long weekend, this year starting on Thursday, is a hot period for burglaries.

Poles traditionally flock to the graves of deceased family members to lay flowers and light candles as Poland marks the Catholic feast of All Saints' Day on November 1.

Last year the period saw nearly 500 road accidents, 43 fatalities and 551 people injured as well as 1,200 drunk drivers caught. (vb)
