Poland is ready for an electronic sick-leave certificates system to be fully introduced on December 1, Gertruda Uścińska, head of Poland's Social Insurance Institution, has told the Rzeczpospolita daily.

Poles will next month no longer be able to get a traditional sick leave note on paper.

Uścińska told Rzeczpospolita that over 40,000 doctors have been trained in using the new system, and that the National Health Fund has spent PLN 50 million (EUR 12 million) to buy computers for medical centres.

Uścińska added that 58 percent of Polish doctors are already using the electronic system, and on Monday alone 100,000 electronic sick leave notes were issued with no technical problems.

However, Rzeczpospolita reported that some doctors are still protesting against the electronic notes, saying they have not been trained and that they need new equipment to gain access to the internet.
