Polish Law and Justice MP dies

Polish ruling Law and Justice MP Jolanta Szczypińska has died aged 61, fellow party MP Elżbieta Witek has told Poland’s PAP news agency.

A deputy head of the party’s parliamentary club, she was an MP during five terms of the Polish parliament.

A nurse by profession, Szczypińska was among the driving forces forming the Solidarity trade union in the healthcare sector in her hometown of Słupsk, northern Poland, during the country’s communist era.

Szczypińska was hospitalised in November 2018 due to complications after an urinary tract condition. Earlier she had suffered from cancer, PAP said.
