Polish PM says his gov’t effective, credible, pro-European

Addressing parliament, Mateusz Morawiecki said Poland under his government boasted fast economic growth, at 5.1 percent in the third quarter of 2018, or 5.7 percent according to seasonally adjusted data.

"That’s more than three times as fast as in the euro area, three times faster than in the European Union" as a whole, he argued.

"We have demonstrated the efficiency of our economic model," Morawiecki said.

He added that his government has implemented a model of “more inclusive and democratic” growth that he said had been confirmed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Morawiecki said in the Wall Street Journal earlier this year that the Polish economy was booming and the country’s ruling conservatives were pursuing a model of "inclusive growth" to create equitable opportunities for citizens.

Morawiecki told the lower house of Poland’s parliament on Wednesday that the country’s budget deficit this year would be the lowest in 30 years, at less than 1 percent of GDP.

He also said that his government has cut taxes for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the lowest level in the European Union.

Morawiecki told MPs that his government aimed to build “a strong Poland" firmly rooted in "a strong, efficient Europe,” adding that “there is no efficient, strong European Union without a strong Poland.”

Morawiecki on Wednesday asked parliament for a vote of confidence in his government to ensure it has a strong mandate to press ahead with reforms.
