The announcement has been made by Brother Alois, the prior of the Ecumenical Community in Taizé, France, at the close of the 41st European Youth Meeting in Madrid.

The choice of Wrocław comes in response to the invitation extended to Brother Alois four years ago by the local heads of the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church, as well as the city authorities.

Wrocław had already played host to the annual gatherings of young Christians from across Europe twice – in 1989 and 1995. They were also held in Warsaw (1999) and Poznań (2005).

The Taizé Community was founded by Brother Roger in 1940. It currently numbers more than 100 brothers of over 30 nationalities, both Roman Catholics and Protestants, including four Poles.

Brother Roger was stabbed to death in 2005 by a woman who was later deemed mentally ill.

The meeting in Madrid brought together 15,000 people, including 3,500 Poles.
