Politicians from various groups were expected to meet at the presidential palace at 4 pm on Monday, a day after the stabbing of Paweł Adamowicz, the mayor of the northern city of Gdańsk, shocked Poland.

President Andrzej Duda wanted to talk to party leaders about plans for a march against violence and hatred in the port city on Tuesday evening, Błażej Spychalski, a spokesman for the head of state, said.

Adamowicz was stabbed several times during a charity drive in Gdańsk to raise money for medical equipment at children's hospitals.

Doctors said on Monday morning his condition was unstable after he sustained a wound to the heart, a diaphragm injury and multiple abdominal wounds.

The knifeman was a repeat offender who was in the past convicted of armed robberies, the country’s interior minister has said.

Top politicians in Poland and abroad condemned the attack while offering messages of support for Adamowicz.
