Polish ruling party announces new programme

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party on Saturday announced changes to its flagship 500+ programme, amid a swathe of promises during a convention in Warsaw.

Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński said the 500+ programme of giving families with two or more children a handout of PLN 500 (USD 133, EUR 116) a month per child will be expanded, so that families could receive the allowance even if they have just one child.
Kaczyński also announced that people under 26 would be exempt from paying personal income tax.
Amid the pledges announced during the conference were also an annual additional benefit of PLN 1,100 for retirees and more bus connections to smaller cities.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that the total cost of the party’s new pledges is estimated at PLN 30-40 billion.
The head of the Polish Prime Minister's Office, Michał Dworczyk, said that "the money for all these pledges is already earmarked in this year’s budget.”
Morawiecki added that the programme is “a fight for the middle class to live at a European level.”
He added that more government pledges are to be announced in June and July.
