Deputy chosen to succeed murdered Polish mayor

A deputy of the murdered mayor of Gdańsk has been chosen to succeed him following a killing that shocked Poland, electoral officials said on Monday.

Acting mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz won a by-election in the northern Polish city by a landslide, gaining 82.22 percent support.
Dulkiewicz will take over as mayor from her former mentor Paweł Adamowicz, who died of severe wounds after he was stabbed by a knifeman on January 14 during a high-profile annual charity fundraiser.
Adamowicz was attacked on stage in Gdańsk in front of a crowd.
Dulkiewicz, a 39-year-old lawyer, ran in the mayoral election as a non-party candidate.
Her rivals in Sunday’s ballot finished way behind. Documentary film director Grzegorz Braun won 11.86 of the vote, while Catholic activist and entrepreneur Marek Skiba gained 5.92 percent.
