Poland became part of the EU on May 1, 2004, a historic step that underlined the country’s re-alignment with the West after decades of communist rule.

In an interview for the Polska The Times daily published on Monday, Morawiecki said: “This is a very important, positive and historic date. Not only for Poland and Poles. For all countries of Central and Eastern Europe.”

Morawiecki also said that EU subsidies have boosted Poland’s economic development. “We have benefitted greatly from EU membership in terms of the economy,” he added.

Morawiecki said that leaders of countries that joined the European Union in 2004 were expected to take part in celebrations in Warsaw on Wednesday. “We will discuss the past 15 years and also talk on how to heal and strengthen the European Union for the next 15 years,” he said, as quoted by the daily.

Meanwhile, a string of events will be held in the Polish capital from May 1 to 4 to mark the anniversary.

Attractions will include popular and classical music concerts, an exhibition dedicated to the founding fathers of the European Union, a family picnic and a big sing-along of Polish songs.
