A flag was raised on the clock tower of the Royal Castle in the Polish capital in a ceremony attended by President Andrzej Duda and the First Lady, Agata Kornhauser-Duda.

After the ceremony, the presidential couple handed out red-and-white flags to Warsaw residents.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called hanging out the flag on May 2 "a symbol of great importance."

"We show our attachment and respect towards Poland," he wrote on Twitter.

Flag Day is a new tradition in Poland -- it was established in 2004.

May 2 is also the Day of Poles Abroad.

Meanwhile, on May 3 Poland marks Constitution Day, recalling country’s landmark progressive constitution passed on 3 May 1791.
