President wants EU, NATO written into Poland’s constitution

President Andrzej Duda said on Friday he wanted a debate on whether Poland’s membership of EU and NATO should be embedded in the country’s constitution.

Speaking at ceremonies in Warsaw to mark Constitution Day, Duda said he was in favour of such a change.
May 3 is a public holiday in Poland, celebrating a historic constitution the country adopted on May 3, 1791.
Some 2,000 soldiers from the Polish army and allied countries took part in a military parade in Warsaw on Friday to mark the day, as well as Poland’s 20 years in the NATO Western military alliance and 15 years in the European Union.
Poland became part of the EU on May 1, 2004, a historic step that underlined the country’s re-alignment with the West after decades of communist rule.
