Poland on alert ahead of European elections

Poland has announced a heightened security alert amid fears that hoax bomb warnings could disrupt voting as the country holds European Parliament elections on Sunday.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has ordered the second level of a four-degree alert system to be introduced.
The alert signifies a heightened danger in cyberspace and will remain in force until 4pm on Monday.
Public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported that the authorities have received signals of what it described as “possible incidents of a terrorist nature.”
The agency cited Stanisław Żaryn, a spokesman for the country’s security services chief, as saying the threat could involve “an attempt to destabilise the Polish state on Sunday."
That day, Poles will head to the ballot box to elect 52 Eurodeputies.
The European Parliament is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union, of which Poland has been a member since 2004.
