Hot weather has seen large numbers of people taking to lakes, rivers and the Baltic Sea to cool off.

According to the Government Centre for Security, most of the drownings are caused by alcohol and bravado.

In a Twitter post, the centre called on citizens to remember basic safety rules.

It warned people not to drink or take drugs before heading to the beach, not to jump into the water without making sure it is safe, and to steer clear of unpatrolled beaches.

In total, 132 people have drowned in Poland since January. Last year’s drowning toll was 545.
