The battlegroup consists of some 3,700 troops from Croatia and four countries which together form the four-nation Visegrad Group (V4) regional cooperation platform: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

“We are connected by shared historical experience […] and our approach to security. Security is incredibly important for our countries,” Poland’s Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak was cited as saying by state news agency PAP.

European Union battlegroups are military units based on battalion-sized forces of around 1,500 troops provided by member states of the bloc.

The battlegroups, also referred to as Europe’s standing army, undergo active rotation every six months, with two units on standby and ready for deployment.
