US Helsinki Commission to convene in Poland

An American government agency known as the US Helsinki Commission was scheduled to convene on Tuesday in the northern Polish city of Gdańsk, its first meeting outside the US, to examine regional security issues.

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also referred to as the US Helsinki Commission, was set to meet in Gdańsk in order to “underscore America’s commitment to security in the Baltic Sea region,” the commission said in a statement on its website.
Government officials from the US, Poland, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden and Estonia were to discuss the “current effectiveness of NATO’s deterrent posture in the Baltics” as well as “regional maritime threats – including Kremlin aggression —and possible responses,” the commission added.
The US Helsinki Commission is an American government agency created by Congress in 1975 to monitor compliance with the Helsinki Final Act of 1975.
The Helsinki Final Act was a major diplomatic agreement between the US, Canada and Western blocs on one side and the Soviet Union on the other in a bid to reduce post-World War II tension.
