Polish-Belarusian consultations on the situation of the Union of Poles in Belarus begin Friday, after accusations that President Aleksander Lukashenko’s regime has persecuted the minority organisation.

The joint talks were agreed after Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski met with Lukashenko in Ukraine this month.

Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer is representing Poland in Minsk with the meeting being chaired by Belarusian ministers responsible for minority rights in the ex-Soviet nation.

The EU has warned Belarus that the harassment of the Union of Poles led by Andżelika Borys - which has had property confiscated and members arrested - must stop otherwise Minsk risks losing financial aid packages and other diplomatic contact. (pg)

It's good that for now Poland decided to give up on its policy of threats and intimidation towards Belarus. Direct negotiations are always good. Let's hope that Polish radio will pick give up on its aggressive tone, too.

Journalist is akin to the ancient Greek demiurge - or the creator of order out of the existing material rather than ex nihilo. The journalist creates the needed appearances from the factual material he collects in the field - which gives an illusion of authenticity to his/her fabrications. That is the essence of his/her trade.

The point is, however, that we tend to swallow these fabrications raw if they fit out own preconceptions, and
object only if they do not.

Poland won't break the independent spirit of Belarusian people. Even Nazi Germany didn't manage to do that.

I do not think Poland is trying to break the independent spirit of Byellorussian people. I believe it is trying to support it. The dispute involving the Union of Poles is between the Byelorussian government and the Polish Government. I don't believe the people of Byelorussia care much about this and Poland has nothing against them.
