Poland to liberalize drug law?

12.03.2010 12:17

The government has drafted a new bill on the prevention of drug addiction, which, in effect, might decriminalize possession of small amounts of drugs, for personal use.

“We want to concentrate on prevention and treatment, not punishment,” said Justice Minister Krzysztof Kwiatkowski, commenting on the draft bill. “Punishing a person for possessing just one joint is absurd,” said Kwiatkowski and added that the state should help drug addicts to quit instead of persecuting them.

The liberalization of Poland’s drug law comes after the Czech Republic’s decision to abolish penalties for possessing a small quantity of illicit drugs.

The draft bill is expected to be forwarded to the Parliament in April.

According to the current law, the possession of any amount of cannabis is illegal and can result in a 3-year prison sentence and drug dealing to a 10-year prison sentence. (mg/pg)

Thin edge of the wedge. This is government saying ' we are not willing to tackle this problem' because it will get the liberal vote in the short term but in the longer term enable crime to increase and the fabric of society begins to deteriorate. Typical political short-termism at the expense of the future.

Bulls**t! Small amounts of weed do not lead to the deterioration of society. How absurd is that? And marijuana smokers are not junkies. They have 'to do' lists just like normal people.
Do us all a favor and evolve a little, and abandon your puritan mindsets. We have more important issues to tackle as humans.
Thanks for reading

i really wish you could have met my college dorm mate Marcin.
he started out with 'a little' weed at first, moved on to morphine, then H, and finally a .40 S&W through the brain.
do us a favor and keep your loony, lefty, liberal, dope smoking, tie dye hippie bullsh!t in Amsterdam.

Mike and Suzi, thank God we have "healthy society" full of perfect citizens like you.
If it weren't for those evil substances that make perfect people do imperfect deeds...
I feel very lucky that I've used some of these deadly drugs in the past and received only pleasure, imagination and personal insight. Not a single S&W bullet.
Mike, can you please explain why I am still alive?
And why you think it's the drugs that made your poor roomie decide he had enough? Why not caused by your enlightening presence as a roomie, for example?
I think only weak persons can blame dead substances for their own or somebody else's mistakes. And I don't think such weak persons make a "healthy society", Suzi, only sheep stock.

I'm currently attending an English Medical program here in Poland and about 1/3 of the students smoke weed - occasionally, on the weekends as an alternative to alcohol which is significantly worse and much more widely available. Maybe if more Polish people smoked pot they wouldn't be so bitchy all the time!

Criminal proceedings for smoking something that grows on gods good green earth seems ridiculous to me. If people have the choice to pour alcohol down their necks, go out and cause violence and destruction, smoke as many cigarettes as their lungs will take before society has to pay for the resultant surgery, then why the hell cant people smoke a bit of marijuana now and again much in the same way as people can have a drink now and again without falling into alcoholism.

@yoss don't waste my time advocating the wonderful world of the pothead.
personally i don't even slightly care why you are alive, but keep doing what your doing, don't let me stop you. just don't come crying to 'citizens' like me with offers bj's for some smack when your recreational habit becomes a $2000 a week addiction.

as far as my former dorm mate (may he R.I.P) i was stuck with him. i could only tolerate him for half a semester. he came in a slovenly junkie and he left a even worse junkie. mostly i slept in studio. only time i came to dorm was to shower and change. sober up junkies- reality is the best drug.
