An aborted Polish attempt to scale the world’s second tallest mountain in winter cost about PLN 1.5 million (EUR 358,00, USD 444,000), the onet.pl website has reported.

“Initially, we estimated the budget at PLN 1.5 million. These costs may turn out to be a bit higher,” Michał Leksiński, a spokesman for the expedition, was cited by the onet.pl website as saying.

Polish climbers were attempting to be the first to conquer K2 in winter.

Leksiński, as cited by onet.pl, said the costs of the expedition included aeroplane tickets, insurance, equipment and satellite communications technology.

The head of the expedition, Krzysztof Wielicki, has said on Facebook that the team would not attempt to reach the summit of K2, adding that the climbers’ safety was a priority.

Wielicki also said that the weather forecast was unfavourable, and that the risk of an avalanche was high.

The K2 attempt was marked by dramatic twists and turns. Two of the climbers including Denis Urubko diverted from the expedition to carry out a dangerous rescue of a French woman stranded on Nanga Parbat in northern Pakistan, the ninth-tallest mountain in the world.

After returning, Urubko broke away from the expedition and launched a failed solo attempt to conquer K2.
