Athletics: Men’s 1,500 m silver for Poland in Berlin

Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski has taken the silver in the men’s 1,500 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, winning his country’s sixth medal during the event in the German capital.

The Polish runner produced a fast finish but was unable to catch Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who took the gold on Friday with a time of 3:38.10. Lewandowski finished in 3:38.14.

Britain’s Jake Wightman claimed the bronze with 3:38.25.

With a total of six medals, three gold and three silver, Poland was third in the overall medals table after day five of competition in Berlin, the onet.pl news website reported.

On Wednesday, Poland’s Paulina Guba took the gold in the women's shot put at the championships.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Michał Haratyk won the gold in the men's shot put while his countryman Konrad Bukowiecki took the silver.

Earlier that day, Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won the gold and Paweł Fajdek took the silver in the men’s hammer throw.

Polish sports bosses have said they are hoping for eight medals in Berlin. A record 86 Polish competitors are taking part in the championships.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
